49ers Sign Free Agent CB Charvarius Ward
Late Monday night the 49ers made an impact signing to help boost their defense for the upcoming season. The 49ers have agreed to terms with cornerback Charvarius Ward, formally of the Kansas City Chiefs, according to Adam Schefter and ESPN. On a day in which 49ers fans watched top corners JC Jackson and Carlton Davis sign with other teams, the Ward signing should be a welcome development for Niners fans.
While the official terms of the contract have not been released yet, the reports are that the deal is worth $42 million over the course of three years with $27 million guaranteed. The decently large price tag would seem to indicate that the 49ers, who are currently about $9 million over the cap, have moves lined up to trim their cap space which may possibly include a trade of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Ward, 26, has spent the last four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs after being undrafted in 2018. According to Pro Football Focus his 51.8% completion percentage allowed was 3rd lowest in the NFL among CBs with 300 or more coverage snaps. Additionally, Ward held opposing QBs to a passer rating of 73.6 which ranked 11th lowest among corners. Ward is also a solid defender in the run game as his missed tackle percentage was only 5.3% which ranked 8th best at his position.
Charvarius Ward will be able to slide right in across from Emmanuel Mosley next season, giving the 49ers a quality cornerback duo that they can rely on. There is plenty of work still to be done this offseason for the 49ers but on day one of free agency they made an impact move to help them try and win a Super Bowl.
